Surgical stapling devices for applying parallel rows of staples through compressed living tissue are well known in the art. These surgical stapling devices generally include a pair of jaws or finger-like grasping elements hinged at one end for opening and closing the jaws and a mechanism for driving the grasping elements or jaws to grasp and form the tissue. The jaws are commonly formed with a concavity, a pair of anvils and a staple forming anvil. The anvils have a plurality of staple forming pockets on their inner surface, which are configured and dimensioned to be aligned with the staple forming pockets of the other anvil when the jaws are closed. A plurality of staples are fed between the anvils of the jaws in an aligned array. Each staple is formed having a pair of legs, one of the legs being longer than the other so that the legs may be deformed by an associated staple forming pocket of an anvil to form a flat, parallel array. The longer leg of the staple is driven through the tissue to form the legs of the staple to come out of the tissue in a parallel and staggered relation with the staples already in the tissue so as to be in a buttressed condition. This arrangement prevents the staples from pulling out of the tissue in the region of the applied staple. After the staples have been deformed to form the buttressed parallel array, the jaws are closed upon the tissue to drive the staples into the tissue. During this operation, each staple is deformed by the associated pocket to its fullest extent to prevent the staple from pulling out of the tissue.
The jaws of the stapling device are actuated by a tool member, such as a tool handle, which is pivotable in a longitudinal direction relative to the body of the stapling device to move the jaws between a closed position and an open position. A portion of the tool handle, having a camming surface, which cooperates with a camming surface on the jaw assembly, is pivotally movable relative to the st ac619d1d87
